The following lists have been compiled by the JHU SOM Medical Students with additions by members of the BME PhD students:

Afghan

The Helmand, 806 N. Charles Street, (410) 752-0311

A Baltimore staple for a long time now, this Afghan restaurant in Mount Vernon is not only delicious but reasonably priced. The interior is calm and a little formal with decorations from Afghanistan. It’s a good place to bring your family or to have a nice dinner with friends. Some popular dishes are the Kaddo Borwani (pumpkin appetizer), the Mantwo pasta shells filled with meat or vegetarian, or any of the kabob plates. In addition to its food, the Helmand’s claim to fame is that it is owned by current Afghan president Hamid Kharzai’s brother. That will get the conversation at the dinner table going!

Comments: A quirky diner that is a must-see stop in late night eats if you are in the Hampden or Homewood area. The food is classic diner food and it is open 24/7 in classic diner style. The kicker is the decor–the walls are covered with old toys, manikins, dolls, and trinkets. The food is a bit pricey relative to most diners, but its a truly unique stop characteristic of B’more.

Spanish/Tapas

Tapas Teatro, 1711 N. Charles St, (410) 332-0110

This place has yummy food and even yummier sangria. Located right off the Charles Theater, Baltimore’s premiere art house movie theater, Tapas Teatro is perfect for before or after movie dinner and drinks and not too shabby for its own sake. There’s something for everyone- veggies, carni (must try the lamb!!!!), sweet teeth. If you just want to grab a drink, you can buy it at the bar and bring it into the Charles Theater lobby. www.ambassadordining.com

Greek

One word: SAMOS. This place is a little hole-in-the-wall in Greektown (read: about 15min southeast of campus, near the Bayview campus). The food is fantastic and the service is great. It’s not huge, so expect a short wait, but it’s totally worth it. They don’t take reservations, it’s closed on Sundays, and you can BYOB. What more do you need to know? Just go! (http://www.samosrestaurant.com )

Japanese/Sushi

It might be a bit of a hike, but Sushi Hana in Towson is one of the best places around for sure. It’s right near the Towson mall and movie theater, so if you’re in the area, definitely stop in for dinner. ( http://www.sushihanatowson.com )

Hikari Sushi
9613 Harford Road
Baltimore, MD 21234-2150

Comments: Besides the drive out to the county, if you are looking for a lunch at an all you can eat sushi bar for under 15 dollars with a great selection and friendly staff, this is the place to go.

Closer by there is:

Ra Sushi
1390 Lancaster Street
Baltimore, MD 21231-3300
(410) 522-3200

Comments: Ra is a modern sushi restaurant with an almost dance club like feel. It has a great happy hour where, for only a few dollars, you can get sushi rolls, sashimi, sake, and a number of delicious drinks.

Edo Sushi

THAI

After two or three thoroughly negative Thai experiences in Baltimore, My Thai in Mt. Vernon completely changed my opinion. I now crave their Pad Thai on an almost daily basis… ( http://mythaibaltimore.com )

There are also these:

Thai Landing
1207 N. Charles St.
410-727-1234
Location: Mount Vernon
Price: $7-18/entrée
Comments: This is probably the best Thai restaurant in Baltimore, although reactions in the class of 2010 have ranged from “it’s delicious” to disappointment. The curries are generally better than the noodles, and make sure to leave room for the mango with sticky rice.

Thai Restaurant
3316 Greenmount Ave.
410-889-6002
Location: Odd
Comments: This is a small, aptly named, family restaurant–the kind where the owner knows your name— and your penchant for his coconut-pumpkin soup. They maintain an ever-changing list of specials, offering only the freshest seafood at any given time. If the front entrance is blocked for some reason, there’s always parking in the rear.
